Montréal French (Canadian) Onion Dip

Montréal French (Canadian) Onion Dip

Makes about 1 ½ cups.

Who’d think that a classic steak seasoning could be the key to making a perfect rendition of French onion dip, everyone’s guilty pleasure? Our Monsieur Montréal steak rub is deeply savory with punchy notes of black pepper and coriander. Here, it’s tamed and balanced by caramelized onions and sour cream. This dip is made with pantry staples and takes only about 15 minutes to whip up — no more packets!

2 tablespoons neutral oil, such as canola or sunflower
1 ¼ cups diced white or yellow onion (about half a large onion)
¾ teaspoon sea salt
½ teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons Monsieur Montréal
½ teaspoon finely minced garlic
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream

Put the oil and onion into a large skillet set over medium-high heat and add ¼ teaspoon of the salt. Sauté, stirring frequently until the onions soften and become translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the sugar and continue cooking and stirring for another 2 minutes.

Add the Monsieur Montréal to the skillet and keep cooking the edges of the onions are well browned, about 2 more minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute, then add the vinegar and scrape up any browned bits stuck to the pan.

Transfer the onions to a bowl and set aside to cool for about 5 minutes. Add the sour cream and remaining ½ teaspoon of salt; stir until thoroughly combined. Taste and add more salt or vinegar if desired.
