Da Lat Marinated Tofu

Serves 2–4, depending on portions and menu.

Perfect for the grill or frying. Da Lat Spice brings the bold, Vietnamese flavors of coffee, star anise, and ginger to tofu (the marinade works equally well with chicken or pork). Make this recipe for an easy weeknight supper and serve atop rice, salad, or on a bun!

For the marinade:
1 tablespoon canola oil
3 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon honey
¼ cup soy sauce
2 heaping teaspoons Da Lat Spice

For the tofu:
1 tub (14 ounces) firm tofu, drained and sliced into ½-inch pieces
Canola or peanut oil, for cooking

Combine the marinade ingredients in a dish that’s big enough to also hold the tofu. Pat the tofu slices dry with a tea towel and lay them in the marinade. Gently turn the slices over so that all sides are coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.

To cook on the grill  Heat the grill to medium-heat and brush it with oil. Lay the tofu slices directly on the grill and cook each side until grill marks show, about 2 minutes each side.

To cook on the stove  Put a tablespoon of oil into a large, non-stick skillet set over medium-high heat. When the oil shimmers, add the tofu slices to the pan and cook until golden on both sides, about 2 minutes each side.
