Mahlab es la semilla del cerezo mahaleb, originario de la región mediterránea y partes de Asia Central. Si bien los pájaros aprecian los frutos no comestibles, los humanos han cultivado los árboles por sus semillas desde la antigüedad. Utilizado para dar sabor a productos horneados y quesos en todo el Medio Oriente y países que anteriormente formaban parte del Imperio Otomano, tiene un sabor similar al de la almendra amarga y la cereza.
