Suribachi, meaning ‘grinding bowl’ and its accompanying wooden surikogi are a traditional Japanese mortar and pestle. Small ridges carved into the ceramic bowl, called kushi-no-me, are ideal for no-fuss grinding of seeds, nuts, and spices. Perfect for whole spices, suribachi are also wonderful for pesto, spice pastes, and other sauces! Place on non-skid surface for vigorous grinding, like a cutting board or damp kitchen cloth.
