Our Statement on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Part of our mission here at Curio states that we are “making sure we all have the chance to eat well.” What does ‘all’ mean?

We believe that diversity, equity and inclusion are crucial in creating a just future for humans and the planet. When we say ‘all’ we mean that  every human, of every race, gender, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation, or economic background, should be able to enjoy the abundance and security that flavorful food provides. 

As a women-led, mission-driven business, we pride ourselves on speaking for the farmers and suppliers whom we work with directly to source our products. These relationships, many of which prioritize women, focus on fair compensation and timely communication in order to begin repairing the gender and economic disparities that have existed for far too long. 

Here are the ways in which we commit to and celebrate diversity and equity at Curio:

• Support Smallholder farmers: We prioritize direct supply chains from underrepresented communities that grow spices sustainably. We work to ensure that historically marginalized communities directly benefit from our work.

• Honor Cultural Culinary Heritage: As storytellers at Curio, we continually strive to amplify the voices of our suppliers and share compelling stories that educate our customers about the cultural significance of the spices.

• Cultivate an Inclusive Workplace: We show up for diversity, equity and inclusion. From hiring, to social events, to feedback, we work to create a team and a culture that is diverse, safe, equitable and positive so that ALL team members feel the energy to contribute and grow as the company grows.

• Make our Products Accessible: Everyone deserves to eat delicious, wholesome food. Therefore, we commit to making our spice products available beyond our direct customers through donations to food pantries, charitable organizations and partnerships.

• Nurture Curiosity: Since it’s part of our name, it’s part of our DNA - curiosity is at the heart of welcoming new ideas, people, and ways of working. The spice industry was historically built on an oppressive system, and we are working to change it for the better. We acknowledge that committing to diversity, equity and inclusion is a continual process, and we must stay open minded and willing to change, hold ourselves accountable, listen to others, and challenge the status quo.
