About this event

Don't miss out on this first-ever collaboration class with Elizabeth Almeida, owner and head farmer Fat Moon Mushrooms! If you’re a mushroom lover but would like to take a deeper dive into the fascinating world of fungi and cooking with unusual varieties, join us for this class. Elizabeth will give you an intro to all things mushroom, sharing her knowledge about how she came to grow mushrooms for some of Boston’s best markets and restaurants, the flavor and nutrition of the many varieties she grows, and how to grow and store mushrooms at home. Curio’s lead recipe developer, Susan Turner, will join Elizabeth to share some techniques for cooking mushrooms and tips about spices and herbs that complement them.

You’ll enjoy tasting the mushrooms (fresh and prepared) as you learn and you’ll take home approachable mushroom recipes, a sample of a very mushroom-friendly spice, and a sample of Elizabeth's mushrooms themselves. Sign up today and let's get umami!

Elizabeth Almeida has been devoted to food, farming, family, and community throughout her life. She grew up on a multi-generation cattle farm in Ohio, where her family grew, canned, and froze their own veggies and meat. As a kid, Elizabeth was active in 4-H and FFA, winning many awards in livestock and cooking, including Grand Champion Chickens!

After college, Elizabeth spent a year living and volunteering in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky, where her eyes were opened to justice issues, including:

  • Food justice, as it relates to affordable access to healthy food
  • Environmental justice, in witnessing how the land was ravaged by corporations mining natural resources
  • Economic justice, in witnessing the societal effects of a lack of employment opportunities.

She left Appalachia with a commitment to continue to work for justice. She lives out her values at Fat Moon, where she produces the healthiest of foods, recycles farm waste into a soil-enriching compost for local farms, and gardens, and provides jobs for her community. Fat Moon Mushrooms can be found in numerous local farmstands and farm to table restaurants around Eastern Massachusetts.
